How to Check if Your Website Is ADA Compliant

This video covers how to check whether your website meets ADA accessibility requirements and what steps give you a clear picture of where your site stands.

The first step most organizations take is running an automated scan. A scan reviews your pages against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) criteria by evaluating HTML, CSS, and ARIA attributes. Scans only flag approximately 25% of accessibility issues, so they provide a starting point rather than a complete answer.

For a full picture, an audit conducted by an accessibility professional is needed. An audit identifies issues a scan cannot detect, including screen reader compatibility, keyboard operability, and content structure that affects how people with disabilities experience your site. Under ADA Title III, there is no specific technical standard referenced for websites, but courts and the Department of Justice have pointed to WCAG 2.1 AA as the benchmark.

The video also explains that checking your site once is not enough. Accessibility changes as content and code are updated, making periodic evaluation and monitoring part of an ongoing process rather than a one-time activity.
